Montreal's Olympic Park sports complex, which will host the 2024 Canadian Olympic Trials from May 13 to 19, remains closed a week after a fire broke out near the Olympic Stadium tower early last Thursday. It remains as it is.
Olympic Park's sports center will be inaccessible until at least April 2, with authorities suggesting it may reopen in stages due to significant water and smoke damage.
The closure of the facility affects more than 4,000 people who regularly use the facility, including hundreds of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
Montreal police said the fire was likely started by someone, but arson police are still investigating whether it was accidental or intentional.
An Olympic Park spokesperson said: “Dust from the fire has found its way inside the sports center and ventilation system, so there is currently a high level of particulate matter.” Cedric Esimigny Said. On April 2nd, we will have a broader view of what is affected and what we must do. We will also be able to provide an exact schedule for how we can open. ”
The 2024 Neptune International Invitational Games was originally scheduled to be held at Olympic Park from April 4th to 7th, but due to the shutdown, the games had to be rescheduled. Classes and activities, including swim class registration, have also been postponed.
Olympic Park was built in the mid-1970s as the main venue for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Olympic Stadium is the former home of the Montreal Expos, who moved to Washington, DC in 2004.
