Trainer Andre Rozier believes it makes no sense for Devin Haney to have a rematch with Ryan Garcia, considering he intends to fight at welterweight.
Rozier says it doesn't bode well for Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) to fight Ryan again because Kingly is much bigger. Instead, Rozier says Haney should next defend his mandatory WBC light welterweight title. That would be Sandor Martin.
Rozier said he still considers Haney to be the No. 1 fighter at 140, even though he lost to Ryan by a 12-round majority decision last week. He pointed out that Ryan was 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit, so he was not a light welterweight.
Rozier says Ryan's win should have an asterisk because he competed overweight, but he says that's not fair.
Haney remains the top lightweight
“It looks like Ryan is going to go up to 147. He says he can't go to 140, so why a rematch?” I don't think it bodes well for Devin to fight him at a catchweight.he [Ryan] It wasn't even fun because he looked so much bigger than Devin,” trainer Andre Rozier told FightHype about Devin Haney's future.
“He's still a world champion.'' “I'm going to rock with him,'' Rozier said when asked if he still considers Haney No. 1 at 140. “This wasn't even a title fight to begin with. Until he meets someone at 140 and fights for that championship, I think he's still No. 1.”
Boxing fans no longer consider Haney the No. 1 fighter in the 140-pound division due to his easy loss to Ryan. It doesn't matter that Ryan didn't gain weight. Still, he won, making Haney look vulnerable.
“It's extremely important,” Rozier said of how much Ryan Garcia, who came in at 3.2 pounds overweight, contributed to the win over Haney. “It wasn't just 3 pounds. He wasn't going to gain weight. He didn't have to sacrifice or suffer to lose weight.
“So he was really comfortable where he was, and what did he do? Then he got even bigger. Great maneuvering, by the way. Great maneuvering, great strategy. He didn't care about the title. He just wanted to win the fight.
“Of course, he didn't make weight because it was for the belt. One won and one didn't,” Rozier said, adding an asterisk next to the win in Ryan's win column. I talked about whether or not I should add one. “Of course there is a shadow to that.”
