Canelo Alvarez will defend his title against undisputed super middleweight champion Jaime Munguia on Saturday night, May 4th, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The PPV price for this event is $89.99.
fans are not sold
It's interesting that the organizers chose to price this event so prohibitively high because fans don't want superstar Canelo to fight Munguia. That's bad news because it's a low-level fight.
Charging nearly $100 for what many fans consider Canelo's golden pick is a gamble for event organizers. While Munguia has an impressive looking record, his resume is too weak to give fence-sitters any incentive to buy the event.
Fans on social media aren't too excited about the Canelo vs. Munguia fight, which is a bad sign.
In addition to this fight not being what fans wanted, neither man has been diligent in promoting the fight on social media. Organizers seem to assume that fans will be willing to pay to watch this event because Canelo is in attendance, but that could be wrong.
It's not a mismatch. Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) has a chance in this fight, but the real question is that he fought an opponent of a high enough caliber to show if he can defeat even this long-toothed version of Canelo. There is no.
Munguia's best wins have come against fighters such as Gary O'Sullivan, Gabriel Rosado, John Ryder, and Sergiy Derevyanchenko. He didn't look that impressive of any fighter.
Given the cost of the event, Munguia should have been scrutinized as a fighter worthy of fighting Canelo, but he has failed to do so. If he had fought and defeated David Benavidez, David Morrell, Caleb Plant, and Christian Mbili, fans wouldn't have been fussing over the $90 price tag.

undercard match
- Mario Barrios vs Fabian Maidana
- Brandon Figueroa vs Jesse Magdaleno
- Eimantas Stanionis vs Gabriel Maestre
Stanionis, the WBA welterweight champion, is an excellent fighter, but his opponent, the 37-year-old Maestre (6-0-1, 5 KOs), hasn't done enough to make a world title shot. He's not well known to American fans, and he's not very appealing to people who want to order cards.
Interim WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios defends the strap against his non-opponent Maidana. This guy is Marcos Maidana's younger brother, but he has zero chance of winning a world title, even with a title as boring as Barrios'.
