Shakur Stevenson, considered the future of boxing, will defend his WBC lightweight title against Artem Harutyunyan in another fight headlined in his native New Jersey.
Stevenson, a 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist, won the WBO featherweight title against Joet Gonzalez in 2019. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist became the WBO super featherweight champion in 2021 by defeating Jamel Herring. He won the WBC and Ring belts by defeating Oscar Valdez, but was later stripped of the title after failing to make weight for his match against Robson Conceição.
The 26-year-old moved up a weight class and defeated Edwin de los Santos in November to win the vacant WBC lightweight title. Looking ahead to future matches against Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis, Stephenson is gearing up for his first title defense at 135 years old.
“I'm happy to be able to return home to Newark, a place that holds the young legend in such high esteem, and to defend my title for the first time at 135 years old,” said Stevenson. “On July 6th, Artem will go down!”

Harutyunyan, who is ranked No. 6 in the WBC lightweight rankings, won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. “The Original” lost to Frank Martin last July and will face “Tank” in June. The 33-year-old has seven wins by knockout.
“I respect Shakur Stevenson as a champion, but I came here to shock his hometown fans and win the WBC lightweight title,” Harutyunyan said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I'm going to make the most of it. This will be my second fight in the United States, but I've learned and improved since my loss to Frank Martin.”
In the co-main event, Oshakie Foster will defend his WBC super featherweight title against Conceição. Foster won the WBC super featherweight title in February 2023. He successfully defended his belt against Eduardo Hernandez in Sporting News' 2023 Fight of the Year, winning by TKO after a brawl. The 30-year-old last fought in February, defeating Abraham Nova.
Conceição is 1-2-1 in his last four games, including one against Stevenson. In November 2023, he fought Emmanuel Navarrete for the WBO super featherweight belt and ended up drawing. “Nino” has 9 wins by knockout.
