According to Deadline, the new film will be directed by David Michaud (Oz, The King) and does not currently have a title. However, the film will chronicle Martin's rise to become the most famous female boxer of the 1990s. Martin is a legend in the boxing world and was the first woman to sign with Don King's boxing promotion during her fighting career.
No other casting information has been released at this time, but Deadline reports that the film is expected to begin filming later this fall and is one of many films seeking distribution for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. It has been pointed out that
Sweeney is excited to get in the ring and transform.
Speaking to Deadline, Sweeney said he accepted the role because of his background in grappling and kickboxing training, saying he was “so excited to get back in the ring.”
“I did grappling and kickboxing from the ages of 12 to 19, and I'm itching to get back in the ring, train, and change my body,” Sweeney said. “Christie's story is not a light one, it's physically and mentally demanding and there's a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.
