Trainer Jeff Mayweather says if Canelo Alvarez gets hit as hard as he did in his win over Jaime Munguia last Saturday night in Las Vegas, he won't be able to beat David Benavidez.
Canelo's price is too high
Canelo made it clear after the fight that he would only fight Benavidez “if the money was right” and that he still wanted $200 million. Yeah, that won't happen.
Saudi Arabia is reportedly interested in putting together a fight between Canelo and Terrence Crawford. It would cost less than the fight between Canelo and Benavidez and would be about the same size financially.
It's a more affordable option for the Saudis than moving forward to fight Benavidez.
Canelo's win was unconvincing
Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs), the undisputed super middleweight champion, defeated Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) by unanimous decision in 12 rounds, but his work rate was low and the fight was not as good as it should have been. It was a much closer battle. He was throwing more punches against the 27-year-old challenger.
One judge gave Canelo a close score of 115-112, but the reason was that his punches were less powerful than the busy Munguia. The close scores were no surprise, as many of the rounds were close and could have gone either way.
The other two judges ruled in Canelo's favor, scoring the fight 117-110 and 116-111. Scored 7-5 for Canelo.
When asked on his YouTube channel who would win if Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez fought, Jeff Mayweather said: “It's still going to be a tough fight, but right now I'm leaning towards Benavidez.” Told.
“I still think Canelo has the boxing skills and the head movement, but if he gets hit as hard as Benavidez got him tonight, he's not going to win. He's been fighting for a very long time. He's at a stage where he's like, “I don't need to fight.''
Benavidez is too dangerous
I don't blame Canelo for not wanting to fight Benavidez. He's too big, throws too many punches, and hits too hard for the 33-year-old Canelo to handle. Benavidez is a true light heavyweight, similar in size to 175-pound champions Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev. Canelo doesn't need to fight at light heavyweight at this stage of his career.
