Irish mixed martial arts star Paul Hughes has named American UFC star Michael Chandler as his ideal role model, not because of his fighting ability, but because of his humility.
Chandler is preparing for the biggest fight of his career against Conor McGregor, headlining UFC 303 on June 29 in Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, Hughes, a Co. Derry native who recently joined the Professional Fighters League, is preparing for his Bellator debut against Bobby King on June 22nd in Dublin. The former Cage Warriors World Champion from LaVie is an inspiration to young MMA stars.
Speaking on Belfast Live, Hughes said: “One name that comes to mind is Michael Chandler. The reason I chose him had nothing to do with the fight, but because of how good a person he is. ” he said.
“And people like that inspire me, because that's what I want to be. I want people to say, 'He's not a bad guy.'” You can contain it, but treat people the right way.
“Those are the types of people I respect the most. You can be the best and you can also be good. There's a life to live and a lot of time outside of fighting.”
As reported by Belfast Live, Hughes said the fight is a fight for all to see as there are legitimate reasons for both fighters to be favorites.
He added, “It's a difficult match. If Chandler can practice his wrestling, I think he has a good chance. He did that against Dustin Poirier, won two rounds, but was stopped in the third round.” Ta.
“But I think if Conor can keep it up, it's probably going to go his way. I don't see Conor going back to the level he was at when he was champion. He's getting older, so that's a natural I think that’s the case.”
“He was in his prime at the time, but he can develop in other ways for this game.”
