There were some thrilling moments at Fight Night in Trenton on Saturday.
The Albion Amateur Boxing Club hosted a spring card that drew enthusiastic support from more than 300 fans when Logan Walsh won the final main event of the card's 13 bouts at the Trenton Minor Sports Community Center. did.
Walsh won a 145-pound decision over Cameron Suttle of Bushido Boxing Club in London, Ont., to loud chants of “Logan!” Logan! Logan! ” That helped inspire him, he said.
“Hometown pride,” Walsh said after the win. “There's nothing like a hometown crowd. 'Logan! Logan! We got more picked up.'
The card included a co-main event in the 125-pound weight class where Bohan Pettipas of the Westville Boxing Club won by decision over Tyson Bowen of the Albion Club.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Pettipas, who played against Bowen for the first time. “He gave me a good pace. It was my first time boxing with him, but he's looking forward to another opportunity.”
A tribute to Albion club chairman Jim Worthen highlighted the break. Club coach Erin McGregor, executive vice president of Boxing Nova Scotia and Canada Winter Games coach, will replace Worthen as president on June 30, at the end of the 2023-24 boxing season. do.
“Jim founded the Albion Club 36 years ago and has put his blood, sweat and tears into growing it since day one,” she said. “Jim had a dream, a joy and a passion to impact the young people of this community and he certainly did that. People all over this country, myself included, are proud of what Jim taught at the Albion Boxing Club. They will say that the lessons you gave them changed their lives and shaped them as people.”
Worthen said he was confident McGregor could do the job as president.
“She's the perfect choice,” he said, noting that she started boxing at the club at the age of 13 and has since gone on to become an award-winning amateur boxer, coaching and supporting the club over the years. . She said, “She never thought of anyone else.”
Worthen said boxing is a life lesson that will help him reach his potential.
“It made me who I am,” he said. “It gave me confidence and structure. I've seen the world and couldn't do without boxing.”
Eight Albion boxers competed on the card, with the remaining two scheduled after the break.
Mason Urquhart of the Albion Club defeated Liam Petten of the CBS Club of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Alden Francis lost a split decision to Matt Gillis of the Golden Cloves, Saint John, Newfoundland.
Albion Club's Max Brunton and Blair Thompson won the match, while Albion Club's Lily Jollymore and Ethan Francis lost the match.
Angus Wilson of the Westville club was also on the card, but lost by decision.
Duke's Up Boxing Club in New Glasgow was also represented. Kevin McKenna, Andrew McKenna and Hunter Nogle won the match.
Worthen said he enjoyed the card and hopes the club will hold another in October.
“It's a great card. I'm very happy with the great support from the Pictou County fans and all the clubs that participated,” he said. “I have a show in October, but it will take me six months to recover before the next show.”
