Edgar Berlanga says he has no interest in fighting former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant next.
Khan's only food: Berlanga
Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), who was promoted from Matchroom Boxing, is hoping to fight undisputed 168-pound champion Canelo Alvarez next, and talks to make that happen are imminent. I expect it to start.
Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is currently a free agent and Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has no choice but to ask Berlanga to try and lure him back to DAZN in September.
Hearn's other fighter at 160, Diego Pacheco, isn't famous enough for Canelo to be interested in returning to Matchroom on a one-fight deal.
Manager Hearn has no one other than Berlanga to lure Canelo back to DAZN, and if that fight happens, fans will be angry because they don't like Edgar's shortcut to a money match.
Plant: A dangerous step up
Berlanga should fight Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) to prove he deserves a title shot, but it would be a dangerous fight that he could lose.
Hearn likely has no interest in pitting Berlanga against Plant, since he signed Berlanga after leaving Top Rank and is paying the New Yorker a lot of money.
British promoters would not recoup their investment if they put Berlanga into someone like Plant or David Morrell, who is also interested in fighting Berlanga. Like Plant, Berlanga doesn't want to fight Morell, and many boxing fans can understand why.
Berlanga fires Plant
“He started talking like crazy. He's not even Spanish,” Berlanga said when asked about his recent altercation with Caleb Plant at the weigh-in for Canelo vs. Jaime Munguia on Friday. He told Hub TV:
“Why are you here, brother?'' You got knocked out by Canelo and beat up by Benavidez, and you want to be in Mexican territory and Latin American territory? You're just looking for an opportunity. You’re looking for influence right now.’ And he looks at me and he knows what time it is and he wants a fight. ”
Some boxing fans believe that Berlanga is trying to “turn things around” by campaigning to profit from a matchup with Canelo, rather than benefiting from fighting a worthy opponent.
Berlanga's highest number of wins:
– Jason Quigley
– Padraig McCrory
– Damon Nicholson
– Romer Alexis Angulo
– Marcelo Coceres: Drop
– Steve Rawls
“'You can't fuck with me. You got knocked out by Canelo. You lost really badly to David. If he fights me, I'm going to end his career,'” Berlanga said. Told.
Berlanga gave the camera his middle finger when asked if he was interested in fighting Plant. “We talk about the sparring we did when we were 17. I was about 18 and had two professional matches and I stopped him with a body shot. He's terrible. .”
