It has been an intense and motivating journey.” “I'm a hard worker, but I realized that I had to work harder to play this role than any other role I've ever worked in my life. What do we know about Smashing Machines?
In December 2023, A24 announced that Johnson and Safdie were collaborating on Smashing Machines. Safdie, known for co-directing 2017's Good Time and 2019's Uncut Gems with his brother Josh Safdie, wrote the script in addition to directing the film.
The film's description reads, “'Smashing Machine' is a drama based on the story of legendary mixed martial artist Mark Carr, who was at the peak of his career during the No Holds era in the UFC.” “In 2000, he struggles with addiction, triumph, love, and friendship.”
Emily Blunt is also reportedly in talks to co-star in the film with Johnson in February 2024. Johnson and Dany Garcia's Seven Bucks Productions will produce the film along with Safdie's Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush and David Coplan.
Carr is a former wrestler and mixed martial artist. He was previously the subject of his 2003 HBO documentary, The Smashing Machine. Click here to learn more about Mark the Smashing Machine Car's history.
