detroit – For a city with such a rich boxing history, it’s only fitting that the best amateur boxers from around the country come together. detroit Competing in the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions for the first time in 24 years.
Metro Detroit Golden Gloves and Downtown Boxing Gym (DBG) will host the 2024 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions from May 13-18 at Huntington Place.
The event will feature more than 300 boxers from 30 Golden Gloves franchises across the United States. Male and female boxers between the ages of 18 and 42 will compete across 20 weight classes for the title of National Golden Gloves Champion.
Huntington Place will be transformed into a boxing arena with four rings. More than 200 matches will be played over the six days of the tournament, with one male and one male winner being crowned the winner.
Metro Detroit Golden Gloves has partnered with Downtown Boxing Gym and the Detroit Sports Commission to help bring the annual event back to Detroit, winning bids from dozens of cities vying to host the big event.
Ansel Stewart, chairman of the Metro Detroit Golden Globes, said the city of Detroit itself was a selling point.
“Detroit was at the forefront when we made our bid,” Stewart said. “We're marketing Detroit and everyone was excited. They've heard good things about Detroit, so they want to come back to Detroit.”
“It's a great way for people to visit and enjoy the city of Detroit,” Stewart said. “We're doing a few different things at Golden Globes this year because we want people to get out and enjoy our city.”
Stewart's long-term goal was to bring the National Golden Gloves Tournament to Detroit. By working with his CEO of his downtown boxing gym, Cali Sweeney, he was able to make that dream a reality.
“This has been a dream of theirs for years, so if there was any way I could support them and support local fighters and children in our community, it was an easy jump for me to jump on board.” ” Sweeney said. “We all worked together with his team and together we made it happen.”
“It was a dream of mine to bring the National Golden Gloves to Detroit, but I couldn't have accomplished that dream without the help of Downtown Boxing, because they don't do much when hosting an event. Because we know what we're doing,” Stewart said.
The national tournament will be held downtown, giving metro Detroit boxers the opportunity to compete with the support of a local crowd.
