Zelpha Barrett (31-2, 17 KOs) had too much firepower for Jordan Gill (28-3-1, 9 KOs) and won the WBA International super featherweight title on Saturday at the AO Arena in Manchester. I stopped him in the 10th round. England.
Going into the 10th round, Gill looked like he was going to win by a narrow margin, but suddenly he was knocked down by a hard body shot from Barrett.
Shortly after, Barrett knocked Gill down again with another shot to the solar plexus. After Barrett struck Gill with a follow-up bullet, referee John Latham called off the match.
Gil's initial control
After falling behind in the first three rounds, 29-year-old Jordan Gill appeared to take over the fight from the fourth round, applying pressure and bringing Barrett through the round. He used his jab and footwork to give Barrett problems and win points.
Gill looked like he was on his way to victory heading into the 10th inning, but he may have been a little too greedy for his own good and allowed Barrett to land an opening.
the tide is changing
Things fell apart for Gil in round 10, as the fight was in Gil's favor. Zelpha Barrett delivered a perfect hook to the body that sent Gil tumbling to the canvas and appearing to be in understandable pain from the shot. Gil struggled to get back up from the knockout.
Surprisingly, instead of playing it safe, as he probably should have done, Gil rose to his feet and then launched an attack. Just when everything seemed to be going well, Barrett suddenly hit a left right into Gill's middle, causing him to fall to the canvas in pain.
This time, Gill barely topped the count and looked in terrible shape when the action resumed. Just like in the previous knockdown, Gil didn't play it safe and fought like a tiger.
