“In the Olympic world, we call these giant rings 'Spectacular' and it's hard to think of anything more spectacular than the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is Paris, it's the face of France. We wanted to provide a memorable spectacle.” Tony Estanguet, president of Paris 2024, said:
For each Games, the Olympic rings will be placed in an iconic location in the host city: Tower Bridge in London in 2012, Madureira Park in Rio in 2016 and Odaiba Bay in Tokyo in 2021.
These Olympic rings will make the Eiffel Tower even more central to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Tower will be the backdrop for the Eiffel Tower Stadium (beach volleyball), Champ de Mars Stadium (judo, wrestling) and Pont d'Iena (road cycling). The “Iron Lady” will also be the focal point of the Olympic winners' celebrations as the backdrop for the Park of Champions at the Trocadéro. The Eiffel Tower has also inspired the design of the podium and medals, each featuring an original piece of iron.
On the night of 6-7 June, a team from ArcelorMittal, official Paris 2024 partner, carried out the high-precision assembly of the monument, in collaboration with the Eiffel Tower operating company and Paris 2024. Four cranes and around 30 people were needed to hoist the gigantic Olympic rings (29 metres wide and 13 metres high).
With less than 50 days to go until the Olympics begin, Olympic symbols adorn the symbols of France and Paris.
