A conceptual map of the 2034 Winter Olympics places many sports in the Park City area.
But top ski racing isn't one of them.
An early map created by the Salt Lake City-Utah Games Committee shows the location of Snowbasin, which also hosted downhill ski races during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Snowbasin also hosted super-G ski races during previous Olympics.
There has been recent talk in the Park City area about the prospect of eventually moving downhill and super-G competitions from Snowbasin to local venues. It is unclear what prompted the chatter, and there are no known formal discussions of such a move. However, if the 2034 Games are likely to be held this summer, the venue map may change from the published one as the Salt Lake City-Utah Convention Committee finalizes the program. There is sex.
Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort and Utah Olympic Park are included in the conceptual venue map for the Games. Each was also a competition venue in 2002, and all three have undergone significant expansion since 2002 or are planned for expansion by 2034.
The Utah Olympic Park expansion included a new ski area. SALT LAKE CITY-Utah Games Committee says Utah Olympic Park's Super-G course, a recent addition to the Snyderville Basin facility, can host lower-level competitions, but not during the Winter Olympics. .
The Salt Lake City-Utah Tournament Committee also said there are no downhill courses in the Park City area. Terrain for a downhill course was identified at Deer Valley Resort several years before the 2002 Olympics, but improvements were needed to host the race. Back in 2002, Deer Valley referenced Snowbasin to show that it wasn't cost-effective to have two operational downhill courses so close to each other.
In a prepared statement in response to a Park Record investigation, Snowbasin said it has signed a venue use agreement for the tournament.
“Snowbasin's famous downhill course is one of the best in the world, and we are honored to bring it back to our resort for a second time,” the statement said.
Snowbasin added, “We have also offered to host a super-G event if the need arises.”
“While we have not finalized all the details regarding it, we certainly have the terrain and expertise to host these additional events,” the statement said.
Any major changes to the venue map, such as relocating ski races, would have far-reaching implications for the overall planning of the event. For example, the Olympic transportation network blueprint requires changes and adjustments to map impacts.
The International Olympic Committee is scheduled to award the 2034 Games to Salt Lake City at a meeting in Paris just before the Summer Olympics open in the French capital.
