There are currently four lightweight world champions, and they all share the same problem: William Cepeda is their No. 1 contender. The Mexican destroyer will face Giovanni Cabrera on July 6 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. The 12-round bout and undercard bouts will air on DAZN.
WATCH: William Cepeda and Giovanni Cabrera, live on DAZN
Cepeda (30-0, 26 KOs) is a ferocious pressure fighter who uses his powerful punches and intense athleticism to break his opponents' will. The 28-year-old southpaw is fresh off a brutal fourth-round stoppage of Britain's Maxi Hughes, who was fresh off a controversial decision loss to former champion George Kambosos Jr.
Cabrera (22-1, 7 KOs) is a quick switch-hitter with plenty of grit. The 29-year-old Seattle, Washington native is best known for his decision loss to Isaac Cruz last year, who went on to win the WBA super lightweight title. Cabrera may have the hand speed advantage, but a lack of striking power may be what causes him to lose this bout.
If Cepeda survives this latest challenge, he will face one of the 135-pound champions — Vasiliy Lomachenko (IBF), Gervonta Davis (WBA), Shakur Stevenson (WBC) or Dennis Belincik (WBO) — later this year.
Sporting News will provide detailed coverage of the undercard results and the main event.
