Former California standout and current San Diego Wave striker Alex Morgan missed last Saturday's National Women's Soccer League game due to an ankle injury, but that doesn't mean she'll be looking to make the U.S. Olympic roster. There may be a problem with the above.
The Wave won Saturday's game without Morgan, defeating Bay FC 2-1, but the bigger issue for Morgan is the U.S. women's team's June 1 game against South Korea and June 1 Olympic conditioning game. The question is whether he is healthy enough to be selected for the team. June 4th. These two games will be the first two games the U.S. team will be coached by Emma Hayes, and will influence Hayes' selection on the U.S. 18-player roster for the Paris Olympics in July.
Morgan, who turns 35 just days before Team USA's first group stage game at the Olympics, is considered a borderline case for whether or not she will be on the USWNT roster for this summer's Olympics. Most experts predict Morgan will make the U.S. Olympic roster, but her injury could affect her chances.
The U.S. national team is scheduled to gather in late May to prepare for the match against South Korea, and the lineup for the two games will be announced at that time. After the two games against South Korea, the USWNT is scheduled to play a tune-up game against Mexico on July 13th and final tune-up against Costa Rica on July 16th. The U.S. roster for games against Mexico and Costa Rica will be the U.S. Olympic roster. The USWNT will play their first group round match at the Olympics on July 25th.
Morgan was injured on April 19 in the final minutes of the Wave's 1-0 loss to the Orlando Pride. She fell awkwardly while challenging for a loose ball and injured her ankle. (The photo at the top of the article shows the moment she was injured.) She limped off the field.
Wave coach Casey Stone said Morgan's condition is week-to-week, so it's unclear if she'll be ready to return next season.
Friday's game against Seattle. This also suggests that this injury is unlikely to be a long-term problem.
Morgan was originally left off the USWNT's Concacaf Women's Gold Cup roster in February, but was added as an injury replacement the day before the tournament began. She started in all but the first match of that event, collecting two goals, one of which came from a penalty kick.
Morgan then started both games for the USWNT in the SheBelieves Cup, but failed to score a goal in either game.
However, the U.S. rosters for these two events include 23 athletes, five more than the U.S. roster for the Olympics.
In four games with the San Diego Wave this season, Morgan has zero goals and one assist.
Morgan scored 15 goals in 17 games for San Diego in 2022 and had seven goals and five assists last season, helping the Wave achieve the best regular season record in the NWSL.
Morgan has scored 123 international goals with the USWNT, by far the most of any active U.S. player, and eighth all-time among players from any country.
