Islam Makhachev maintained his top spot in the lightweight division by defending his title against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday.
Makhachev (26-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC) submitted Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) in the fifth round at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, tying the division's record for title defenses and extending his winning streak inside the Octagon to 14.
Following this win, Makhachev appears to have two paths ahead of him: commit to stepping up to welterweight to challenge the winner of Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad at UFC 304, or attempt to retain sole possession of the 155-pound title defense record in a rematch against Arman Tsarukyan.
