Who is Christy Martin?

Martin has been involved in sports since childhood. She was a Little League catcher and played basketball at Mullens High School and Concord College. In 1987, she fell in love with martial arts when she participated in the “Tough Man” contest. This was her first year that women were allowed to compete, and she easily won the contest thanks to her sports-centered background. She also experiences a natural sense of elation whenever she steps into the ring, stating:The adrenaline rush you get when you actually knock someone out is probably the best drug in the world.” Sensing some taste for fighting, she took part in training and began her professional career in 1989 with a six-round draw with Angela Buchanan. Her career skyrocketed after the fifth fight. Martin, who earned a decision victory over Andrea Deshon in 1990, ultimately bulldozed the tournament, posting an astonishing 16-fight winning streak. In 1991, she and her future husband Jim Martin teamed up and everything seemed to be heading in the right direction. With her legendary boxing promoter, Don Her King, making a name for herself, Christie eventually became increasingly recognized.

Unbeknownst to the public, Christy Martin was gay, a secret her husband knew from the moment they started working together. Still, they decided to get married and a long relationship filled with lies and abuse began. By 2010, their marriage had fallen apart after one of the most brutal acts of abuse she had ever experienced in her life. While taking a nap at their home in Tampa, Florida, she heard the sound of her husband sharpening a knife. Suddenly, her husband attacked her. He stabbed her multiple times, beat her mercilessly, and shot her in the chest, which fortunately missed her heart by inches. The attack lasted for over an hour and was excruciating. When she heard the bathroom tap turn on, signaling Jim to get in the shower, the boxer seized the opportunity to run out of the house. Unfortunately, she had the wrong car keys. But miraculously, a man named Rick Cole drove by and stopped to take Christy to safety.

Christie was physically safe, but seeking justice was another matter. The trial that took place two years later left her with many questions. Prosecutors doubted whether the jury would believe that Jim, a much older and seemingly frail old man, could inflict such great bodily harm on a professional boxer. The judge sentenced her to 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole, finally giving her answers and complete justice. Jim Martin is unlikely to serve his full sentence due to his advanced age.

Christy Martin is a Hall of Fame boxing legend

Christie may have been left for dead by her ex-husband, but she couldn't escape. Her nickname “Coal Miner's Daughter” expressed her working-class sensibilities and her undying will to recover from her traumatic past. She married her former sparring partner Lisa Holwin in 2017 and takes her maiden name Salters. In 2020, She was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame along with other big names such as Bernard Hopkins and Juan Manuel Marquez. She hasn't completely left boxing.
