(Reuters) – Three years after Conor McGregor broke his left leg against Dustin Poirier, he will return to the cage against Michael Chandler on June 29, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White said.
White told reporters after Saturday's UFC 300 event that the welterweight bout will headline UFC 303 in Las Vegas.
Irishman McGregor (22-6) hasn't fought since July 2021, when he suffered a clean break to the tibia and suffered his second straight TKO loss to Poirier. The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion required surgery for the injury.
Former Bellator lightweight champion Chandler (23-8) also lost to fellow American Poirier in his last fight in November 2022.
The bout has been teased by the UFC for more than a year, with McGregor and Chandler coaching opposing teams on the MMA-based reality show The Ultimate Fighter last year.
McGregor announced the same date and opponent for his next fight in a video posted to X last December, calling it “the greatest comeback of all time.”
