Wrexham AFC has grown to become one of the most popular football clubs in the world under ownership by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The North American actors bought the club in November 2020 when it was in the fifth tier of England's football pyramid. Wrexham's instant success changed their game and they quickly rose through the ranks. For the 2022/23 season, Wrexham returned to EFL League 2, the fourth tier of English professional football.
As of the 2024/25 season, Wrexham play in League One, the third tier of the English football pyramid. With two games remaining in the 2023/24 season, Wrexham have secured their place as one of League Two's top three teams. As a result, they jumped up to League 1. In the long run, Wrexham's only obstacle will be the Championship, the second tier of English football, which brings them one step closer to the Premier League.
Wrexham are playing in League One for the first time since the 2004/05 season. Since then, Wrexham have spent a short period of time in the fourth tier. Most of that time was spent outside of the English Football League. The club's rapid growth in recent seasons is a welcome development for one of England's oldest teams.
As League One competitors, Wrexham will face even tougher opposition. Former Premier League sides Blackpool and Wigan Athletic are just two of the 24 teams to face Wrexham in 2024/25. Although they achieved promotion for the first time in the 2023/24 season, their prospects will become even more difficult in the 2024/25 season. But it is inching the club closer to its highest ever position.
In the 1978/79 season Wrexham finished 15th in Division Two, the league that later became the Championship. After spending four seasons in Division Two, they were relegated to the third tier of English football.
What league does Wrexham currently play in?
As you can see, Wrexham have never played in England's top flight. But they are on pace to reach the league much sooner than expected. A direct comparison is with Luton Town, who took 10 years to rise from England's Fifth Division to the First Division. However, no club in English history has ever been promoted to the top five leagues for three consecutive seasons. Other clubs have had similar success in the lower tiers. For example, Manchester's FC United were promoted from the 10th division to the 7th division in three years. Wrexham have the chance to move up from Division 5 to Division 2 within three years.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have transformed this proud hometown team into a world powerhouse.of welcome to wrexham Documentaries are particularly powerful in the United States.
