Wetumpka senior Brody Worrell, who has terrorized high school defenses for years, is getting a chance to play at the next level.
Worrell, a multi-year starter and the 2023 Elmore County Boys Soccer Player of the Year, recently committed to play collegiate soccer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
“It's really amazing,” Worrell said. “Ever since I was a kid, my mother and grandfather have spent all this money to help me play college soccer and organize soccer events, but I want to keep playing forever. That's what I always thought. That's amazing.”
Worrell traveled to Huntsville for a camp hosted by UAH in December. During his stay, he played well and really stood out to head coach John Carrier and his staff.
Carrier spoke to Worrell while he was there and got in touch shortly thereafter, asking Worrell to come back, tour campus and play on his current team. Worrell did just that, further impressing his coaches and leaving with an offer.
“He offered me right after my tour and it went from there,” Worrell said. “It was a very easy decision. The campus is very nice to me and when I went to tour it really stood out to me. The dorms are great, the food and the city are great. The team really feels like family. I feel like I can fit right in.”
After speaking with coaches, I think Worrell will play somewhere in the midfield. He doesn't care if it's a box-to-box midfielder or a centre-back. He will play wherever he is needed.
He played midfield and center back for Wetumpka in high school, where he had a lot of success.
Last year, as a junior, he scored 19 goals and provided 12 assists as a center back and was named Player of the Year. Now that he's a senior, he still has a lot of time left in his career, and he's already surpassed that number with 20 goals and 14 assists.
I believe his skill set allows him to be successful at the collegiate level no matter what position he plays.
“My IQ is the best part of my game and I think it helps,” Worrell said. “He can pass the ball very well. He has a good range of passing.”
With four games remaining in the regular season, Wetumpka currently has an overall record of 12-5-1 and has already clinched the Class 6A, Area 3 championship by defeating Stanhope Elmore twice.
The Indians will host a first-round game against Pike Road, with the winner facing the winner of Montgomery Academy and Stanhope-Elmore.
There are high expectations for the program, especially after holding No. 1-ranked Mountain Brook to a 1-1 tie in early March.
“After the draw with Mountain Brook, I feel like we can at least make it to the Final Four,” Worrell said. “We need to beat Pike Road and see where it goes from there.”
