Vietnam is set to make history in Asian boxing with the launch of the WBA Asia Tournament, or WBA Asia-Vietnam Tournament, a new boxing development programme promoted by the World Boxing Association's regional office.
This national tournament is a regional, yet locally led, event aimed at developing the grassroots of professional boxing in countries across the Asian continent.
Vietnam will be the first stop on the program, with eight new fighters from the country looking to win in the opening bout to help them grow and thrive in the super bantamweight division.
The fighters already announced by WBA Asia will take part in the boxing shows that will cap the historic WBA Asian Games, which will be held from 9-11 August in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The boxing programme will take place at the Saigon Sports Club Arena in the city.
The WBA Asia Vietnam Tournament will be held in a tournament format. The weigh-in and draw will be held on August 10th to determine the match-ups. On August 11th, the quarterfinals will be held as the main event, with Ervin John Paciones facing Nantanon Togchai for the WBA Asia Light Flyweight belt.
The winners will then face off in the semi-finals for division supremacy.
The future of Vietnamese boxing has been realised through a joint effort between WBA Asia, the Vietnam Boxing Committee and Shadow Entertainment.
A Groundbreaking Convention
The boxing show is part of the historic inaugural WBA Asian Games, which will be held from August 9-11 at the New World Saigon Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.
More than 100 people from the Asian boxing industry are expected to participate in the tournament.
The tournament agenda can be found on the WBA Asia website: http://www.wbaasiaboxing.com/media/?nMt=vSingle&mCd=573
The WBA Asian Games is part of the World Boxing Association's master plan to strengthen its regional offices and is also one of the association's strategic objectives.
For the WBA and WBA Asia, this event holds a very special meaning as it will be the first time that a professional boxing tournament will be held in Vietnam.
This was made possible thanks to the support of the Vietnam Boxing Committee (VBC), which is responsible for regulating boxing activities on behalf of the government.
This historic milestone makes the WBA, WBA Asia and VBC the first organisations to bring together the region's professional boxing elite in Vietnam, living up to our motto of “Always being the pioneers”.
