Fans from all over New England flocked to Gillette Stadium, the home of the Revolution, to watch Messi play. Attendance was in record numbers.
An unprecedented crowd of 65,612 packed into Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. The previous record was set on October 20, 2002, when 61,316 fans filled the same stadium. They went there to watch the New England Patriots play against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The best production ever delivered as promised. The 36-year-old had a great performance, scoring two goals and scoring another goal as Miami won 4-1. In fact, the Herons captain contributed to all three of his goals for the team.
This made him the first player in Major League Soccer history to reach five consecutive games. He scored nine points, the most in the league, in seven games.
How was Inter Miami's first half?
At Gillette Stadium, Tata Martino fielded a starting eleven that included two substitutes from last weekend's win over Nashville. They took to the field with Drake Callender in goal, forming a four-man defense with Marcelo Weigand, Tomas Avilés, Nicola Freire and Franco Negri.
Julian Gressel, Sergio Busquets and David Luiz lined up in the center of the field, with captain Lionel Messi and Robert Taylor flanking striker Leonardo Campana. Host Tomas Ciankarai decided the match in the first minute, giving his team a commanding lead.
Inter Miami's goal in the 32nd minute gave the visitors hope after the hosts took an early lead. After taking control across the penalty area, Taylor set up Messi with a through ball. The Argentine genius won the ball on the right side of the penalty area and calmly fired a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper.
This goal marked Leo's 8th goal of the regular season and his 10th goal in all competitions. Meanwhile, this assist marked Taylor's second of the season. In the first seven games of the season, the Argentine contributed 14 goals, making him the leader of the MLS scoreboard this season.
This makes him the first player in league history to reach this milestone, surpassing Carlos Vela (13 goals) and Thierry Henry (11 goals). He also became the sixth player in MLS history to record a goal assist in the first seven games of the season.
What happened to Inter Miami in the second half?
The former Barcelona captain continued his excellent performance in the second half, assisting Inter Miami's comeback. In the 68th minute, Busquets was one-on-one with the goalkeeper after threading a pass into the area. He scored the visitors' first goal with a left-footed shot to the far post, putting his side up 2-1.
Messi has scored 9 goals this season and 11 goals for the year in all competitions, while Busquets has 3 assists for the season and 4 assists for the year in all competitions. Klemaski then scored from a rebound to give the club a 3-1 lead in the 83rd minute.
This was the 19-year-old's goal in just his third appearance this season. To cap off the scoring spree, Luis Suarez scored five minutes later.
