The Washington Huskies welcomed a large crowd to their Luau at the Lake this weekend, but one visitor in particular was particularly noteworthy.
Zach Staskowski, an offensive tackle from Central Catholic (Ore.), who has committed to the University of Minnesota, added that he received an offer from Jedd Fisch's program less than 10 days ago.
But his weekend visit was seen as a chance for the Huskies to fill a dearth of tackles by acquiring a promising prospect from the Pacific Northwest who has improved in recent months.
Sounds like the trip couldn't have gone better!
Prediction: Zach Staskowski to the Washington Huskiess
The 6-foot-6, 275-pound lineman spoke highly of the trip to Seattle.
“It was really nice,” Staskowski said, “to get a chance to meet with the coaching staff and the new staff and see what they're going to keep and what they're going to bring in as a new staff.”
So, has this trip already made him reconsider his commitment status?
“Yeah, it was,” he said. “It's hard to say you're 100% done recruiting. You have to do what's best for you and go where you're most comfortable.”
analysis
247Sports has Staskowski ranked as the No. 911 overall prospect and the No. 2 player in the state of Oregon, but my assessment is entirely different.
Frankly, I think he's about 500 places too low.
I had the Central Catholic star as the state's top recruit and a four-star prospect with the potential to play in the NFL.
Staskowski, who can play either left or right tackle, still needs to get stronger, but his combination of size, length and athleticism could give him a real shot at making an impact on Sunday once he comes together physically.
Former Central Catholic coach Steve Pyne has coached several big-time offensive line prospects and future NFL players and has consistently praised Staskowski as a top prospect.
If Washington does indeed complete the transfer, it would be the latest evidence of his influence at Oregon, where he has largely left Oregon in the running for national-caliber freshmen, whom Oregon State has struggled to recruit as a member of the Pac-2.
Fisch already has 2025 commitments from four-star tight end/defensive end Baron Naone of West Linn and three-star defensive lineman Dominic Macon of Nelson, as well as four-star running back/athlete of 2026 Ansu Sanoe of Lake Ridge.
According to my rankings, three of the top four players in the class of 2025 are committed to Washington, leaving only three-star tight end Jackson Doman of Canby, who will be enrolling at BYU after completing two years of LDS missionary work.
That's quite a gain for the Huskies.
Will they be able to finish the pack? Washington fans may not have to wait too long to find out.
