It's been a whirlwind for Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young when it comes to the transfer portal this spring. He's seen a mass exodus of players from his 2023-24 team out of Blacksburg, and his latest commitment led to a rather surprising decision on Monday.
Just a month after signing Young, UTSA transfer Jordan Ivey-Curry released his contract and resumed recruiting. It's been a very eventful month for the Hokies, who announced shortly after his arrival that he would enter the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. He has now resumed his recruitment and will likely play in college next season.
Young still has scholarships to fill for next season, and on Wednesday, the recently accepted recruit from Blacksburg committed to an SEC school.
Young and his staff recently brought in Clemson transfer RJ Godfrey, who was supposed to fill a big need at Virginia Tech, but he Committed to Mike White and the University of Georgia Wednesday afternoon.
This season, Godfrey averaged 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in just under 16 minutes per game for the Tigers, who advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. The 6-foot-8 sophomore decided to remain in his home state of Georgia rather than join the Hokies, which feels like another disappointment in the transfer window.
Young has commitments from Charleston's Ben Burnham, California's Rodney Brown and Temple's Heijer Miller, but there are still roster spots to fill. You could argue that Godfrey is a higher priority, as he would have provided good depth up front with Burnham and Maillijael Poteet, but it's back to square one for Young in the portal.
