Starting on Boxing Day, or Judgment Day, in December, the stagnant heavyweight division suddenly became more active, thanks in large part to the efforts of Turki Al-Sheikh, who has bankrolled many of the big fights that boxing fans want to see, especially in the heavyweight division.
The biggest fight so far took place last month, when Oleksandr Usyk made boxing history with his win over Tyson Fury.
Usyk scored an official knockdown in the ninth round and ultimately won the bout via split decision in round 12. With the win, Usyk became the first undefeated world heavyweight champion since the great Lennox Lewis last held the title nearly 25 years ago, and with the win, Usyk also became the first undefeated world heavyweight champion in the modern four-belt era.
Usyk vs. Fury is just one of many fights taking place in Saudi Arabia, where an increasing number of top heavyweights are vying for titles and positions. Some of the big fights at heavyweight have seen Anthony Joshua win against both Otto Vallien and Francis Ngannou, Joseph Parker impressively beat Deontay Wilder and Jiray Zhang, the latter with a recent knockout win over Wilder, Daniel Dubois bouncing back from his loss to Usyk with wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, and Agit Kabayel boosting his profile considerably with notable wins over Arslanbek Makhmudov and Frank Sanchez. More fights are on the way, with Andy Ruiz Jr. set to face Jarrell Miller in August and of course the highly anticipated rematch between Usyk and Fury in December.
So who are the top 10 heavyweight boxers currently competing?
In this episode of Rummy's Corner, we answer that question and provide a quick overview of the heavyweight landscape. Watch the video and enjoy one man's opinion. This is Rummy's Corner (produced and narrated by Geoffrey Ciani).
