Utah State University announces cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. drowned in Porcupine Reservoir
LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. drowned Saturday in Porcupine Reservoir, the university announced.
According to the Cache County Sheriff's Office, a search began Saturday afternoon after a report of a young man who had jumped off a cliff at the reservoir and failed to surface. His body was recovered by a dive team at approximately 9:05 p.m.
“Multiple witnesses spoke of the same information and after an investigation we believe this was a tragic accident,” the sheriff's office said.
Seldon joined the Utah State football team this summer after transferring from New Mexico State, where he played the past two seasons under Utah State interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling, and prior to that spent two seasons at Michigan.
“Our football program is heartbroken over the loss of one of our colleagues,” Dreiling said. “Having known Andre closely during his time at New Mexico State, I know he was a great person and teammate. We mourn with Andre's family and offer our condolences and prayers for this great loss.”
Dreiling was promoted earlier this month after Utah State fired coach Blake Anderson for violating university rules.
Seldon, who played at Belleville High School in Michigan, appeared in 15 games for New Mexico State last season, recording 36 tackles, seven catches and one interception.
“The Aggies community is heartbroken to hear of the passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” New Mexico State University said in a social media post. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
Seldon was set to begin classes at Utah State University in the fall semester.
“The Utah State University athletics community is heartbroken by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” said Diana Sabau, Utah State University vice president and athletic director. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved Andre.”
