CACHE COUNTY, Utah (KTVX) — Authorities say Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. has apparently drowned in northern Utah.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, the Cache County Sheriff's Office said they were searching for a young man who dived off a cliff at Porcupine Reservoir and failed to resurface. The reservoir is about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City and 40 miles south of the Idaho state line.
His body was discovered by a dive team around 9pm on Saturday.
“Multiple witnesses spoke to the same information and after our investigation we believe this was a tragic accident,” the Cache County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Authorities identified the man as 22-year-old Utah State University cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. Details are scarce, but authorities believe Seldon drowned.
“Our football program is heartbroken over the loss of one of our guys,” interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling said. “Having known Andre closely during his time at New Mexico State, I know he was a great person and teammate. We mourn with Andre's family and offer our condolences and prayers for this great loss.”
Seldon transferred to Utah State this summer from New Mexico State, where he was a defensive back at Dreiling, and played his first two seasons of college football at the University of Michigan after playing at nearby Belleville High School.
Seldon played in 28 games at New Mexico State, was named a team captain and recorded 98 tackles, two interceptions, 13 interceptions and five tackles for loss. He also recorded six interceptions for the Aggies last year.
Seldon transferred to TCU this winter but re-enrolled this spring and was expected to transfer to Utah State and compete for a starting spot in the secondary.
“The Utah State University athletics family is heartbroken by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau. “We offer our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved Andre.”
