Herriman, Utah (July 3, 2024) – Utah Royals FC Forward Ifeoma Onumonu He has been selected as an alternate for Nigeria's squad for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
This will be Nigeria's fourth appearance at the Summer Olympics. Nigeria advanced to this stage after beating Cameroon 1-0 on aggregate in February, while reigning African Cup of Nations champions South Africa advanced to the fourth round after scoring four goals and conceding no goals in their two matches against Tanzania. Nigeria advanced to the Olympics after beating South Africa 1-0 and drawing 0-0 on aggregate.
The Super Falcons will begin their Olympic group play against Brazil in Bordeaux, France on 25 July 2024. They will then continue their Olympic campaign against Spain in Nantes, France on 28 July 2024. Nigeria will conclude their group stage against Japan in Nantes, France on 31 July 2024.
The Super Falcons are Africa's most successful nation, having won the Africa Cup of Nations 11 times, most recently beating South Africa in the final in 2018. They are the only African women's national team to have reached the quarter-finals of both the World Cup and the Olympics.
Onumonu has earned 15 caps for Nigeria after playing for the United States at the U-23 level. The former NWSL champion will be available for the Royals’ first away game against the Seattle Reign on Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 4pm MT at Lumen Field.
