Utah — The state's new NHL franchise doesn't have a name yet, and likely won't for some time. The new owners did not address the issue at Friday's formal press conference announcing the move.
But when several names were recently trademarked, one name in particular surprised Britney Marriner.
“I was so surprised to wake up this morning and see that 'Utah Fury' was trademarked,” she said. “I said, 'Oh my god, this could really happen!'”
Marriner is an author who began writing a 14-book series in 2017 and 2018 centered around a fictional NHL hockey team he dubbed the “Utah Fury.”
“We discovered a need in the market for hockey romance books,” Marriner said. “I wrote and created this Utah Fury world, and readers fell in love with this world, and I fell in love with being in this world. So in the end, he wrote 14 books long. It’s now.”
The author has no idea how it could be a coincidence that one of the names ever trademarked is the name of her series.
“I'd like to believe it's a reader who works in the NHL or somewhere in Utah who read the book and thought it was a great name. If it's chosen, I'd be happy to share it with the team.” Mariner said.
Although partial, Mariner said he believes Fury is the best team name and would be willing to lend his expertise if the team wanted it.
“I'm waiting to be called in as a consultant to the team,” Mariner said. “I asked them to choose the logo and colors. I did some market research and am looking forward to hearing back from you.”
