Let’s have another season at USF. football start.
On Saturday, the Bulls will play their annual spring game at Corbett Stadium, giving fans a glimpse of how USF will build on last year's impressive 7-6 season.
“It's going to be a fun Saturday afternoon here in Corbett,” Bulls coach Alex Goresh said in a press conference Tuesday. “Our players are really looking forward to it. We're going to have some fun things in the spring game.”
Unlike a regular season football game, the Green & Gold game pits the Bulls offense against the Bulls defense.
Here are some areas to watch for Saturday afternoon's Bulls kickoff.
quarterback
Redshirt freshman quarterback Byram Brown became well known after the game. record setting freshman season.
Now, the darling of USF football is returning for his third collegiate season.
Brown said he gained about 15 pounds during the offseason, increasing his weight from 205 pounds to 220 pounds.
It will be interesting to see how the added weight affects his play, especially his mobility. Brown runs well – he had 809 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground last season.
Another area to keep an eye on is who will take reps at the backup quarterback position. Bryce Archie, a sophomore, split time Meanwhile, freshman Israel Carter withdrew his name from the transfer portal this offseason.
Related: 'I strive for an edge in everything I do,” said USF two-sport athlete Bryce Archie.
Receiving machine
Who will be the No. 2 receiver for the Byram Browns?
Senior wide receiver Sean Atkins quickly became Brown's favorite target last season. There was a revolving door ahead.
Junior receiver Nayem Simmons had a record-setting game against Rice, but couldn't do much better. Kafre Brown and Jayden Alexis had their chances, but were unable to produce consistently.
One name to watch is graduate wide receiver Abdulrahman Yaseen, who transferred to USF this offseason after spending four seasons at Purdue.
At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Yacine is one of the biggest wide receiver targets on the Bulls' roster.
defensive backs
It's safe to say that defensive backs struggled at times last season.the bulls gave up second most National passing yards.
This time, the Bulls will look to strengthen their defensive backfield, bolstered by a new positional coach and several new transfers.
Senior Dammarco Augustin and junior Deshaun Rucker (transfers from Youngstown State and Tennessee, respectively) are new additions to a secondary that was particularly vulnerable last season.
It will also be interesting to see who will replace Daquan Evans, the Bulls' longest-serving defensive back after leaving the team in the NFL Draft.
tight end
Freshman tight end Jonathan Echols could be one of the most interesting additions to the team in 2024.
Echols flipped him off. dedication Transferred from Tennessee to USF in December and became a member of the Bulls. Highest rating Commit over 10 years. He was announced as an early enrollee in December and joined the team for practice in preparation for the Boca Raton Bowl.
He'll likely be the third tight end in the depth bracket behind two returning starters (senior Gunnar Greenwald and junior Weston Wolfe), but the Bulls will utilize their freshman star in an interesting way. I look forward to doing so.
