Below is a recent article about the Olympics from the Associated Press.
PARIS (AP) — Field hockey referees will be mixed gender at the Paris Games, the sport's governing body said in a first for an Olympic sport.
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced the change on Sunday, and although it has previously used mixed-gender referees at other tournaments, it is a first for the Olympics.
“Gender equality is deeply ingrained in the DNA of hockey and FIH will not miss any opportunity to further this,” Tayyab Ikram said in a statement. “By introducing mixed-gender field umpires at the Olympic Games, FIH reiterates its commitment to gender equality in sport and society.”
Hours earlier, International Olympic Committee officials said gender equality across sports was a top priority. The ratio of men to women in Olympic sports is roughly 51% to 49%, according to the IOC's database.
Field hockey is one of 28 of the 32 Olympic sports that is gender-balanced, with 12 men's and 12 women's teams participating.
“There have already been many historic firsts and historic moments at this Olympic Games, and many more in the works,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said at the IOC's regular news conference. “One of those is the first-ever (near) complete gender equality, which is really something to celebrate.”
Field hockey in the Paris suburb of Colombes has an exactly 50/50 split between men and women on the refereeing staff, according to the FIH, and Paris organizers say there is an even split among the 45,000 Olympic volunteers.
Field hockey competition begins Saturday and continues with the men's and women's gold medal games on Aug. 8 and 9.
