Upcoming events will encourage girls of all ages to take to the ice and try hockey
Equipment, skates and coaching are all free, thanks to the Omaha Lady Junior Lancers and USA Hockey.
This is an exciting event for girls of all ages and skill levels. We're talking about girls. Come experience hockey for free. And we're here to tell you all about it, Ana Csupo and Brecken Smith from the Omaha Lady Junior Lancers. How are you all doing this afternoon? I'm good, I'm good. So Brian, um, tell me why you decided to start playing hockey? Because my family had always done it and I thought it was fun and cool. And I liked it. Yeah, so I said, “Go do it well.” Ana, when did you start? I started playing hockey when I was 10, but I started skating when I was 3. Yeah, it was pretty cool. By the way, um, what's your favorite thing about hockey? Um, probably the fact that the coaches and the girls are all nice. That's nice. Do you like shooting pucks? Right? I mean, that's fun too, right? What's your favorite thing about hockey? What I love about hockey is that I can control the play, I can control when I get off, where the puck goes, where I'm on the ice, what I do. And it's really cool to be able to do what I want. Exactly. So, um, what is it like to play on a women's team? I know a lot of people when they think about hockey, they think about a men's team or something like that. But there are a lot of girls that are actually playing. It's like you're practicing with a big group of girls. Um, does that make you feel super special and cool? It makes me happy because I don't have to be on a men's team. Sometimes I wish I wasn't on a men's team, right? Because not all, um, hockey places have women's locker rooms and I would rather have a women's locker room. Of course. Um, you're definitely unconventional, so that's a good thing. What I love most about being on a women's team is that we're all in the same boat, so it's easy enough to feel like it's okay to make mistakes. And the conversations in the locker room are great because we're all girls. You can talk about anything, right? Right. So, um, there's an event coming up, will you guys be participating? Yes, yes. So, are you participating while skating or are you trying to get the girls to join teams and participate in games? Okay. Yeah, right. And we're trying to help the girls know what to do when they play hockey. But actually, any age can come. Yeah. Anyone. Anyone, anyone can participate. Do you need skates? Do you know if participants need to bring their own or rent? It's probably going to be rentals. Yeah, rentals. Skates. Yeah. We'll bring our helmets, gloves, sticks. So, bring your own. Great. Great. The girls' tri-hockey free event is June 29th from 2:45 pm to 4:45 pm. Call, uh, uh, actually, where can I go? Do you guys know where this is? Uh, it's the Moylan Iceplex. Oh, it's like 103 Second Polish.Yes, it's great. I used to skate there when I was younger.
