The Tennessee Volunteers football program had two players named to the preseason All-American list.
The Tennessee Volunteers have had some notable players on both offense and defense this season: The Volunteers had two players selected to the Walter Camp Football All-American list on both the offensive and defensive units.
The first-team All-American list is made up of center Cooper Mays and edge rusher James Pierce Jr. Tennessee is using quarterback Niko Iamareva at quarterback this season, his first as a full-time starter, so it's good for the Volunteers to have one of the best players in the country for him to rely on.
ESPN's Matt Miller recently published his latest NFL Draft first-round mock draft, in which Miller projected Pierce Jr. to go fourth overall to the Tennessee Titans. Here's what Miller wrote about the pick:
“It will be a proving season for second-year starting quarterback Will Revis, but his early performances have allowed us to forget about the top quarterbacks in the draft for now. Instead, the Titans could land my preseason No. 1 overall pick and one of the top in-state prospects. The 6-foot-5, 242-pound Pierce has exceptional quickness around the edge, earning 9.5 sacks last season, and also showed off his all-around game with six interceptions for 52 yards last season. Pierce will be an instant asset to opposing Harold Landry III teams.”
The Tennessee Volunteers are looking to build on what they accomplished last season under head coach Josh Heupel, and the first step is for players like Maye and Pierce Jr. to live up to preseason expectations. If they do, Tennessee has a good chance of being a playoff contender this year.
