BALTIMORE — High school football coaches and the Maryland community are mourning the deaths of three star football players who were involved in a car crash early Saturday morning.
Kylie Jackson is He was drafted by the NFL's Minnesota Vikings three months ago.Isaiah Hazell played college football at the University of Maryland and the University of Charlotte, while Anthony Litton Jr. played at Florida State and Penn State.
They were all friends and teammates at Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
“They had a great relationship,” Wise High School coach Darrone Parrish told WJZ. “It went beyond football. It was a bond and a friendship. We'll never forget who they were.”
The three were driving a Dodge Charger around 3 a.m. Saturday on Route 4 in Prince George's County when a vehicle struck them, causing them to run off the road and flee.
Maryland State Police say 23-year-old Cori Clingman was driving eastbound when she changed lanes, striking a police vehicle and causing it to crash into several trees. Troopers say alcohol may have been a factor.
“We're getting more information all the time, but at the end of the day, it's unfortunate that they're not with us anymore,” Parrish said. “It's a hard truth to accept.”
Maryland Governor Wes Moore spoke about his reaction to the incident.
“The state of Maryland is heartbroken this morning by the passing of @real_khyree,” Moore said on Twitter. “Wise High School graduate and NFL draft pick, Kyrie, was a true talent who touched so many lives. We mourn his soul and the two others lost in this accident.”
Former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver and WJZ contributor Torrey Smith also shared the message.
“My prayers go out to Kylie, Isaiah and Anthony,” Smith said on social media. “Praying for their family, friends and the Y's community.”
The NFL said it was “deeply saddened and devastated by the death of Vikings rookie Kyrie Jackson.”
The Minnesota Vikings added: “Our hearts go out to Kyrie's family, friends, teammates and coaches, and all of the victims of this tragic accident.”
The accident remains under investigation and charges against Clingman are pending.
