Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Earlier this week, it was reported that a heavyweight bout between top contenders Alexander Volkov and Geirton Almeida had been booked for UFC 302. The fight was reported by legitimate journalists and sources, but the next day, a Volkov vs. Sergei Pavlovic match was announced instead at UFC Saudi Arabia.
what happened?
According to Eurosport's Marcel Dorf, the Almeida-Volkov match was actually planned until the last minute change of direction. Was there a problem with that sudden decision? Volkov and Pavlovich have been training together for years, but neither fighter knows anything about the fight being booked! Russian media outlet Red Fury MMA reported that both teams were surprised and upset by the announcement.
Additionally, a source told RingSide24: “Volkov and Pavlovich have no intention of fighting, they are good friends and train together regularly. Fights like this are only possible because of that. UFC Saudi Arabia bout in jeopardy after Sergei Pavlovich, Alexander Volkov blindsided by fight announcement Challenger or title fight. Volkov also already had a contract for a fight with Brazil's Geirton Almeida. There will now be negotiations between the league and the manager to cancel the match between Volkov and Pavlovich. ”
My Russian isn't very good, but you don't need much bilingual ability to read between the lines here. The UFC has announced another unsigned fight. What other “surprises” will this announcement bring to the athletes involved? This is not the first time this has happened, as it is a well-established tactic for pressuring fighters to accept a match or terms.
It happened to Dustin Poirier too.
Stay tuned for more updates and some form of official announcement. But I don't recommend getting too excited about Volkov vs. Pavlovich just yet.

There is no way to 100% stop fraudulent record-keeping in MMA, but if you catch it, the world will know. Congratulations, Sanjar Ajibayev, your fight page has been permanently flagged for your lies and deceit. https://t.co/CBucQ1Zv3B

Of Sanjar's past six wins, it was conclusively determined that he had been involved in stealing the identities of quality inactive fighters to make his record look more impressive. In fact, he was punching an anonymous tomato can.
— Tapology (@tapology) March 29, 2024
For example, Mikhail Kislyka, a 16-4 Ukrainian fighter, has been inactive since 2017. https://t.co/ryjxefviFX Sanjar's team was able to trick Tapology's editor into posting a photo on Kisurika's Tapology page.
— Tapology (@tapology) March 29, 2024
We did not have any photos of Kisulika before, so we were not wary of this kind of deception. Once the fake photo was posted on Kisurika's page, Sanjar's team handed it over to WEF Promotions so that the fake Kisurika could get a contract to fight Sanjar.
