Tom Aspinall and Curtis Blaydes will face off for gold at UFC 304. The interim heavyweight championship bout will be fought over five rounds and will take place on Saturday, July 27 at Co-op Live in Manchester, England.
It's not normal for a fighter to protect his opponent. preliminary While a title shot is unlikely, that's not the case for Aspinall (14-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC), who won the belt last November by knocking out Sergey Pavlovic in a bout that took place just two weeks prior. This was after champion Jon Jones was seriously injured and forced to pull out of his title defense against Stipe Miocic. After winning the interim belt, Aspinall lobbied hard for a unification bout with Jones, but to no avail, and Jones is now scheduled to face Miocic again in November.
Instead, Aspinall will face Blaydes (18-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC), who defeated Aspinall by TKO in July 2022 after suffering an injury in a freak accident early in the bout. Blaydes, who has won four of his last five fights, lost to Pavlovic but has returned strong, most recently beating Jairton Almeida at UFC 299 in March of this year.
