It took about three months and it was difficult to book the main event itself, but the blockbuster was UFC 300 The match card is finally the final match. No more tinkering, no more to be decided Top – 13 games will be played at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Two true titles at stake – Light Heavyweight Champion alex pereira Defend against former champion Jamahal Hilland strawweight champion Zhang Weili face Yang Xiaonan — And when you become a “BMF” champion, you get a pseudo-title Justin Gaethje Fight against former featherweight champion Max Holloway.
Now that everything is set, how will the fight card stack up with UFC's other 100th anniversary events? UFC 100 and UFC 200Is it worth the extra hype?? And most importantly, is he worth $79.99 on pay-per-view?
MMA Fighting's Jed Methu, Mike Heck, and Stephen Marrocco sit down in a virtual war room to score the UFC's offerings.
Jed Methew: For those of you who don't know, in 2023 I debuted a new system for evaluating matchups called “The Meshewlin Guide.” The premise is simple and based on the Michelin Guide restaurant rating system.
- 1 star = very good restaurant (match card)
- 2 stars = great restaurant (fight card), worth a detour (short visit)
- 3 stars = great restaurant (fight card), worth a special trip.
UFC 300 is the most prolific three-star fight card in the history of the stars, the galaxy, and the entire universe. There has literally never been a better matchup card put together (at least on paper). Two title fights, a presumptive “Fight of the Year,” two possible No. 1 contenders, an amazing 13(!) UFC Champions on the card, and two Olympic gold medals. Medalists will participate. If the worst match on the card has a potential future champion (Bo Nickal), that card stacks up more than David Blaine's card.
Literally the only bad thing about this card is that by putting all the good matches on this card, all of the match cards for the next month end up being very bad. But events like this don't happen often, so this is a price we should all be willing to pay (along with $79.99).
However, this event does not fulfill all its promises. This is a fighting game and anything can happen. But even that pretty It's unlikely given the matchup.
I'm giving the UFC a lot of crap (and if I'm being honest, they should give it more), but not only did they do a great job of loading this card up, but they did it with fighters who rarely deliver misfires. accomplished. This means they gave him two possible outcomes for UFC 300. Either the best fight of the night in martial arts history, or a very good fight of the night.
You know you've got something special when the floor at your event is still amazing.
Grade: A+++++ (a plus that envelops the earth)
Mike Heck: I don't want to be too judgmental on this subject, but if you don't rate this at least an A, then your expectations were completely unreasonable (as Dana White told us It certainly didn't help that it promised us a main event, but it was still very good and didn't knock our socks off all over the world, but I digress).
UFC 100 and UFC 200 took place during a time when the promotion, and the sport as a whole, was gaining buzz and notoriety, with many of the top-tier stars leading the way to get them to that point and attracting new attention. It was based on that. product. Blocking his Lesnar contributed greatly to the success of both aforementioned events. Star power sold.
But that was then.
This is now a world where the words UFC shine brightest on the marquee, where the world's best fighters compete, but are not the stars of the show. The two biggest stars currently on the UFC roster have only fought three times since 2021, Conor McGregor and Jon Jones, but to their credit, the UFC is… It's only growing in popularity, and it's hotter than ever.
This card is a good representation of what the UFC will look like in 2024. There are very talented fighters and they are incredibly fun to watch, but you won't find any big superstars. That's totally fine, because this card is totally ridiculous. Every match is important, every match has meaning, and with the exception of Bo Knickal vs. Cody Brundage, every match will be over quickly, but nearly every match has high divisional stakes.
Here are some highlights. Pereira vs. Hill was already on my list of fights to watch in 2024. Zhang v. Yang is historic. Gaethje vs. Holloway is everything to me. My prediction for Tsarukian this year is that he will either age significantly or quickly turn to ashes. The charm of Qatar vs. Sterling. Then there's the rest of the card – it's very good.
If UFC 100 and 200 represented the state of the UFC at the time, then UFC 300 is exactly the same. But this might be the best card the UFC has ever put together.
Grade: A+
Steven Marko: UFC SIL ALERT!
Pound for pound, this is the best 100th anniversary card the UFC has ever assembled. The reason, in my opinion, is the level of intrigue in almost every fight on this card. With burning questions, many of these matchups promise answers about the competitors and where they stand in their careers.
Examples: Can Jamahal Hill get his money back at 205? Which is the bigger BMF, Gaethje or Holloway? Is Arman Tsarukyan championship material? Charles Oliveira has another title to his name I wonder? Is Bo Nickal the uncrowned 185-pound champion? Jiri Prochaska's return, Aljamain Sterling's featherweight debut, Kayla Harrison's UFC melting pot, the inevitable shootout between Figueiredo and Garbrandt, and as White says, the list goes on and on…
And when you combine that with the competitiveness of the top two title fights, I think this card will surpass UFC 100 and UFC 200. My feelings probably would have been different if Jon Jones hadn't fought on USADA's own legs, but I think the April 13 fight card has more related connections with more interesting storylines than previous fight cards. A battle will take place. You don't need a big Brock Lesnar to be the best at an event. We need a UFC fighter who brings a rich history to the fight. In that regard, UFC 300 has it all. The only downside to this card is the unrealistic expectations white set in the first place.
My only nonsense? MS Paint, junior graffiti artist event poster. Seriously, my dog could have done better.
