U.S. Men's Olympic Soccer Team coach Marko Mitrovic on Monday officially announced the roster of 18 players and four reserves that will compete in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
The U.S. men's soccer team's appearance in the Summer Olympics, which began July 26 and will conclude Aug. 11, will be the first since finishing in ninth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Guidelines for the U.S. Olympic men's soccer team state that players must be 23 or younger to join the team, with exceptions allowed for three players on each tour, according to a U.S. Soccer news release.
Of the 18 players selected for the team, 17 have played in MLS or honed their skills in an MLS academy.

“I couldn't be more excited to have such great players and such great people representing us at the Olympics,” Mitrovic said of the U.S. Soccer Association.
“It's a special moment for all of us because they've worked their whole lives to get to this stage. Nearly every one of these players has followed the U.S. Soccer path, gone professional and now will achieve their dream of competing in the Olympic Games,” he added.
“We are grateful to the club for supporting our mission and releasing our players. Our goal is to make our country proud and we will give everything for the USA.”
The U.S. Soccer Youth National Team posted a new video Tuesday featuring former Olympians offering advice to those traveling to the games in Paris.
Dax McCarty, a member of the 2008 Olympic team, congratulated the winning athletes and called on them to be an inspiration to all the kids who watch them compete.
“Hopefully, seeing you on the international stage representing your country in one of the biggest sporting events in the world will inspire kids to aspire to follow in your footsteps,” he said.
Similarly, Stu Holden also competed in the 2008 Olympics and said that any player named to the 2024 team will be a “forever Olympian.”
“I hope the 2024 Olympic team proves that the U.S. can truly compete with the best countries in the world. It's been a long time since we last competed in the Olympics in 2008, but I hope the next generation of athletes will be inspired by you all.”
