(New York) – U.S. men's national soccer team coach Gregg Berhalter has been fired, sources announced.
The U.S. Soccer Federation said in a statement Wednesday that Berhalter was “terminated effective immediately.”
“I want to thank Greg for his work and dedication to U.S. Soccer and the men's national team,” U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement. “We are now focused on working with Athletic Director Matt Crocker to find the right person to leverage his experience at the highest level of the sport to lead the U.S. Men's National Team into a new era of on-field success.”
Berhalter's departure came after the national team's 1-0 loss to Uruguay in last week's Copa America tournament.
U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker has begun a search for Berhalter's replacement, the federation announced.
“I am extremely grateful to Greg for his commitment to the men's national team and U.S. Soccer over the past five years,” Crocker said in a statement. “Greg has earned the respect of everyone in the organization and played a key role in unifying a young team and moving the program forward. I wish Greg the best in his future endeavors and am confident he will be successful in his next coaching position.”
Berhalter, 50, served as head coach from 2018 until the end of his contract in 2022, then was rehired in June 2023 on a contract running through the 2026 World Cup.
According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, he had a record of 44 wins, 17 losses and 13 draws in 74 games as head coach, including 29 wins, 9 losses and 7 draws in official competitions. During his tenure, the team qualified for the 2022 World Cup, where they ultimately lost to the Netherlands in the round of 16.
As head coach, he led the team to a 2021 Gold Cup victory and two CONCACAF Nations League titles.
