Tyson Fury is in the midst of training for his next fight against Oleksandr Usyk, but there is no shortage of potential challengers for the Gypsy King in the future.
In an interview with Charlie Parsons stomping ground (Starting at the 2:05 mark) When asked about a possible rematch with former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, Fury said he would fight anyone “for the money.”
Later in the interview (starting around 9:10 p.m.), Fury dodged a question about a possible fight with Anthony Joshua if he gets past the two fights with Usyk.
“Boxing is one of those things. You don't have to get in the ring or leave the ring,” he said. “So how do I underestimate an absolute beast? He's an absolute killer and a bad guy, Usyk. So how do I underestimate him, looking at a guy I've already beaten twice?” Would you? I don't think you would do that, would you? ”
A rematch between Fury and Ngannou seemed very likely, as their October showdown was much closer than anyone expected. Ngannou was knocked down in the third round, but Fury won by split decision.
There was some hope that a rematch would be set up between the two, but after Ngannou's second-round loss to Joshua on March 8, that may not be as appealing now.
Fury vs. Joshua is a fight that has been talked about for years, but various obstacles stand in the way. A fight appeared to be happening in March 2021, when both teams signed a two-fight deal to unify the heavyweight titles.
Immediately after the agreement was reached, the arbitrator ordered Fury to fulfill his contractual obligation to fight Deontay Wilder for a third time before facing Joshua. Neither fight has materialized at this time, with Fury ultimately defending his WBC title against mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte in December 2021.
Joshua lost the WBA (super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles to Usyk in September 2021. Usyk defeated Joshua in a rematch to retain those titles and win the vacant championship. ring Championship.
Fury and Usyk have agreed to a fight for the undisputed heavyweight title on May 18th. The contract includes a two-way rematch clause that allows the loser to trigger an automatic return match.
