The Tailings Catholic boys soccer team was looking to win a title last season, but things went awry as the Rebels were eliminated in the Division II playoff quarterfinals.
But among the bright spots for the Rebels was Charlie Mader, who established himself as one of the state's best goal scorers.
“Charlie is a special player with the perfect combination of natural talent, great work ethic and competitiveness,” said Rebels coach Stephen Devine. “He's a competitive guy. He knows that if he can perform above his standards, we have a good chance of success.”
Mader scored a team-high 42 goals and had eight games this season with three or more goals.
“This season has been very special for Charlie,” Devine said. “He broke the school record for points scored in a single season.''
For his efforts, Mader was named the Acadiana Advocate's All-Metro Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
“I think he is very deserving of All-Metro MVP,” Devine said. “He's not just a great player, he's a great person, teammate and student. He does the right things on and off the field.”
Last season, Mader scored five goals against Catholic NI. He had four goals against Barbe, Comeau, Lafayette High and Sam Houston. He then scored three goals against Archbishop Hannan, St. Thomas More and Minden.
“He's physically difficult to guard,” Devine said. “He's a big kid who's very agile. When he gets the ball, he knows how to use his strength and quickness to get past defenders.”
