Glenn Jennings, manager of WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tzu, said this Saturday night in Las Vegas that if he wins his March 30th match against Sebastian Fandora, Tzu will be eligible for the next fight against Errol Spence. is reportedly considering giving up the title. For Tszyu, fighting Spence next is a bigger paycheck than Terrence Crawford.
boxing voice report Jennings said he thinks the next fight against Spence could be Tszyu instead of Terrence Crawford. Jennings says he plans to speak this Monday after Tszyu fights Fundora.
Tszyu must defeat Fundora, vacate the WBO 154-pound title and negotiate a fight with Spence's management. There would be a lot more money for Tse to fight Spence and then Crawford than the other way around.
This news isn't great for Crawford as he expects to fight the winner of the Tszyu vs. Fundora fight next, but that may not happen now that Jennings has a bright idea.
It would be wise for Tszyu to get a bigger payday over the charismatic 2008 U.S. Olympian Spence, who has a deeper connection with fans than Crawford.
Why Team Tszyu likes ErrolSpence
- Bigger payday: Spence is a bigger star in the U.S. than Crawford. So, more PPV purchases = more dough for Tweet.
- Fan appeal: Errol is charismatic and has a larger fan base than the more reserved Crawford.
- Potential legacy fight: Tszyu vs. Spence could be a legacy-defining fight
- More excitement: Spence is an aggressive type of fighter who likes to get up front and mix things up. Crawford, in contrast, is a counter-puncher who moves frequently and changes stances without need. It's full of gimmicks that super-hardcore boxing fans will love, but people who like watching pure action will find it boring.
The idea is for Tszyu (27-0, 17 KOs) to take on former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) in a high-stakes bout, then come back and reclaim the WBO belt. It must be something.
In the meantime, Crawford will fight for the belt against the top contender, ranked 154th in the World Boxing Organization Top 15 rankings. That is if Crawford chooses to fight for the belt. With him, he might choose to go up to 168 and hang around to see if Canelo Alvarez throws him a bone.
