Brian Kelly and the LSU football staff remain busy in the NCAA transfer portal as evaluations continue.
The Bayou Bengals brought in some free agents this offseason to fill the hole at the defensive tackle position, but there is a new position group that LSU is targeting. That's a cornerback.
After hosting the No. 1 and No. 2 defensive tackles in the transfer portal, LSU has contacted Wake Forest cornerback Dashaun Jones, sources confirmed to LSU Country. On3 first reported that LSU was in contact with his ACC stud.
As talks continue, the hope is that LSU can bring Jones to Baton Rouge for an official visit sooner rather than later. According to multiple media outlets, he is scheduled to visit Alabama this weekend for officials.
Jones entered the portal on Tuesday and immediately drew interest from several SEC programs, including LSU.
Jones, a Baltimore native, has become one of the top cornerbacks on the free agent market. Jones, who has competed at a high level for the Demon Deacons, has several years of eligibility left and is gaining experience in the secondary.
After starting nine games as a redshirt sophomore in 2023, Jones recorded 37 tackles and led the team with three interceptions on the year. He also added two pass breakups.
The impressive list of schools Jones should contact as he begins the portal process consists of Alabama, LSU, Michigan, and Ole Miss, just to name a few.
A long, long cornerback, he fits the mold of a typical Corey Raymond prospect. We've seen Raymond pursue corners that fit his physical type in the past, but it's clear he sees something in Jones as he begins to push the Wake Forest talent forward. is.
As it stands, LSU's cornerback room is solid, but lacks experience with true freshman P.J. Woodland and sophomore Ashton Stamps running with the first team to round out spring ball.
In addition to Woodland and Stamps, Javien Tobiano, Jaire Brown and JK Johnson are also on the team, and veteran Zai Alexander will be in the rotation this summer after recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. He is expected to return. Sources told LSU Country that Alexander could return early this summer for training, ahead of schedule.
Now, Raymond and Co. have a clear goal in mind as they try to push for Wake Forest's Dashawn Jones, but they'll be up against some impressive programs.
