Farmville, Virginia – This summer, Zoe Tierney The junior was selected to play in the 2024 Senior Nexus Championship, continuing a long history of success for Longwood field hockey.
This special event brought 144 of the top collegiate field hockey players from across the United States to Virginia Beach for three days of competition from July 14 to 16. The players were split into eight teams to compete in the event.
She earned her spot after training and trying out at one of seven U.S. Field Hockey High Performance Centers.
“I'm very proud to have been able to represent Longwood and the team,” said Tierney, a native of Fredericksburg, Va. “The coaches helped me get through the nerves at the start of the game and helped me understand that if I play it simply, hockey is easy.”
The Senior Nexus Championship serves as a step along the Olympic Development Pathway Program, with players having the opportunity to be selected for the 2024-25 U.S. U-21 Women's National Team Selection Camp or Junior USWNT Selection Camp, or for the U.S. Women's National Development Squad or U.S. Women's National Team.
“I was able to relearn the fundamentals of the game, pick up new skills and gain confidence in my overall hockey ability,” Tierney added.
Tierney, a star for the Lancers, was an end-to-end presence in the midfield and recorded five goals and five assists. She served as team captain last season and started all 18 games.
Tierney wasn't the only Lancers player to attend the event. As head coach, Miranda Rigg He also coached one of eight senior Nexus teams.
Rigg led his team to victory in the overall standings, but Tierney's team outperformed Rigg on the first day's races, while Tierney's team finished in fifth place.
In addition, new students Ella Elliott She competed in the U-18 event and led her team to a second-place finish. The Newport News, Virginia native will join the Lancers in the fall after racking up an impressive 96 goals in her high school career.
Lancer field hockey will host an exhibition match against Lynchburg on Wednesday, August 21st, before opening the regular season against Davidson on September 6th.Number Elizabeth Berger at Jackson Field.
