Three-time Olympic medalist Shane Rose was hospitalized this week after sustaining serious injuries in a “severe fall” during a school session, his team announced Friday.
Rose's team posted an update on Facebook confirming that the equestrian suffered multiple injuries in a fall the previous day and is currently in intensive care.
“Yesterday, during cross-country class, Shane suffered a severe fall. Fortunately, his horse was not injured in the fall,” the statement read.
“Shane is currently in the ICU with a badly fractured femur, fractured pelvis and ribs. He also suffered a severe concussion.”
Rose underwent surgery on Friday to “stabilize her femur and pelvis.”
“The timing is unfortunate, but we hope he has enough time to recover and be able to continue his preparation schedule for the Paris Olympics.”
Rose, 50, qualified for the Summer Olympics with last week's victory in New Zealand, but the injury could cause her to miss another Olympics.
According to Reuters, the athlete had previously qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 2012 London Games, but was unable to compete due to problems with his horse.
Australian equestrians have competed in three Olympic Games, winning two silver medals and one bronze medal.
Rose made headlines last month when she was given permission by Equestrian Australia (EA) to continue her pursuit of Olympic qualification after complaints were made for wearing a “mankini” during a showjumping competition in Australia. Ta.
