The synergy between professional wrestling and mixed martial arts
The connection between mixed martial arts leagues like UFC is often credited to two pop culture phenomenons: Bruce Lee and professional wrestling. While deceased great fighters are often mentioned when discussing the origins of MMA and the core philosophies of martial arts, it was the popularity of professional wrestling that helped these contact sports leagues break into the mainstream.
With the most popular of these promotions now operating under the same umbrella, there's no denying that WWE and UFC can work together to create synergy and enhance each other. But how effective has this collaboration been for both industries? Here are some ways in which the two industries have thrived alongside each other.
Contradiction works
The most striking similarity between these industries is the way the fights are presented. For decades, this has been the most prominent feature of professional wrestling in live entertainment, and the same for mixed martial arts. But that's where the similarities end.
Naturally, the obvious difference is that professional wrestling matches are pre-determined, while MMA matches are unpredictable, which is very controversial among fans. This is why very few professional wrestling matches are featured on UFC betting sites in Canada. However, some do exist. This contrast certainly stirs up controversy, but it has undoubtedly helped both industries maintain their relevance in the mainstream.
Since then, the animosity between the two communities has faded and the relationship between the two communities has only grown since WWE and UFC stood side by side under the same umbrella.
Common names and fields
Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez, Ronda Rousey, Bobby Lashley, Dan Severn, Kazushi Sakuraba. These names have one thing in common: they've taken both industries to great heights. These ferocious fighters have touched both the realms of professional wrestling and mixed martial arts in unexpected ways, some of which are still surprising to read about today.
For example, Dan Severn, also known as “The Beast,” has been successful in defeating opponents both in the ring and in the Octagon. His superior amateur wrestling skills helped him dominate early UFC competitors, and he made his mark as the first UFC Triple Crown champion. At one point during these championship reigns, he also held the NWA World Championship belt, an incredible feat that only “The Beast” could accomplish.
Both industries share some common moves that add to the spectacle of their matches. For example, the powerbomb is a notorious match-ending move in professional wrestling that takes time to pull off. In MMA, it's a devastating move that knocks out most competitors, but like in wrestling, there are finicky conditions for it to be effective. Either way, seeing the move in action is a spectacle in itself.
The synergy between the two industries has been extremely fruitful over the years, and with both industries currently at the height of their popularity, professional wrestling and mixed martial arts are set to continue to create even more amazing shows for their fans.
