The Pac-12 and Big Ten were not happy with the fact that the SEC only has to schedule eight conference games in college football. The Pac-12 and Big Ten play nine conference games, making the schedule tougher. SEC teams are not penalized for playing The Citadel or Chattanooga before their November rivalry games. If the SEC is not penalized, there is no incentive for SEC teams to change their schedule practices. However, adding Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC brings it to 16 teams, which means ESPN and Disney want more games. Ole Miss athletic director recently said changes are coming to the SEC college football schedule when speaking about the cancellation of the home-and-home series with USC.
“So I think some of the higher profile matchups may get canceled. If you look at USC, they're in the Big Ten and they're playing nine conference games right now. I think that's probably going to be the case in our future as well.”
That's it: the SEC will likely eventually move to a nine-game format, maybe not in 2025, but no later than 2026. Finally, the Big Ten and USC will get what they've wanted for so long in college football.
