More: Phil Steele's 2024 preseason college football rankings
So what does the latest college football transfer portal team rankings look like right now? Taking into account the value of the players added to their rosters, here are our latest rankings of the 10 schools who benefited the most from the portal this preseason.
After losing Henry Parish, the U needed a presence at running back and acquired former Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, who rushed for more than 2,100 yards and 16 touchdowns in two seasons. The additions of wide receiver Sam Brown and especially quarterback Cam Ward, who has rushed for 13,874 career yards and 119 touchdowns, should help revitalize Miami's offense.
The departures of cornerback Komani McClain and tailback Dylan Edwards are not welcome developments for Coach Prime, but otherwise he has added valuable reinforcements in areas of need, including edge rusher and TFL machine Dion Hayes and offensive blocker Peyton Kirkland, who helped protect quarterback Shedul Sanders on a line that allowed an NCAA-worst 56 sacks last year.
Valuable offensive additions include wide receiver Noah Rodgers from Ohio State and tailbacks Hollywood Smothers (OU) and Jordan Waters (Duke), but no one is more important than Grayson McCall. The veteran quarterback has more than 10,000 career passing yards and 106 all-purpose touchdowns and may be one of the most impactful transfers in college football.
After losing a ton of defensive contributors from their 11-win team, Missouri has added valuable reinforcements in linebackers Khalil Jacobs, Jeremiah Beasley and especially former Clemson cornerback Toriano Pride. Offensive tackle Kayden Green is also a key addition to guard the core of dynamic skill players returning from OU.
The reigning ACC champions suffered the loss of key players but have refilled with quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who is coming off the best year of his career, tailback Roydell Williams and receivers Malik Benson and Jaylen Brown. Defensively, the Seminoles made up for the loss of edge Jarrett Verss by signing former Georgia pass rusher Marvin Jones Jr.
Georgia lost key targets Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey but signed Colby Young and London Humphries and added new players to a wide receiver rotation that already includes Dominique Lovett and Lara Thomas. Former Florida back Trevor Etienne has scored 15 all-purpose touchdowns over the past two seasons and should help anchor the offense.
While offensive signings like veteran quarterback Dillon Gabriel and wide receiver Evan Stewart have garnered attention, the Ducks' defensive signings may be more meaningful. Former Spartans edge rusher Derrick Harmon, ex-Alabama safety Peyton Woodyard and lineman Jamarie Caldwell are key pieces to an already dominant front line.
Finding replacements for the transferring receiving talent was a tall order, but Steve Sarkisian did a great job of it. Alabama's Isaiah Bond and Amari Niblack, Oregon's Cyrus Bolden and Houston's Matthew Golden are big gains for the Longhorns' offense under SEC transfer coach Quinn Ewers. Former UTSA edge rusher Trey Moore is a blockbuster transfer to the line, recording 14 sacks last fall.
Portal king Lane Kiffin lost star back Quinsion Judkins but responded by adding 24 transfers. Defensive linemen Walter Nolen and Princely Umanmillen were elite acquisitions, as were cornerback Trey Amos and linebacker Chris Paul. Wide receiver Antwain Wells will add to the rotation, with Tre Harris returning and Jackson Dart returning under center. With the expanded playoffs and this roster, the Rebels are a team to watch in 2024.
Judkins, a two-time SEC rushing champion, joins a backfield that already features the return of leading rusher Treveion Henderson to create the best one-two punch in college football. They're playing behind veteran quarterback Will Howard, who is coming off the best year of his career. And on defense, former Alabama five-star safety Caleb Downs is patrolling the deep passing lanes. Ex-Tide center Seth McLaughlin is also a big addition. And former Alabama quarterback Julian Sain joined the Buckeyes with a chance to compete with Air Norland for QB1 in 2025.
