The mixed martial artist reported being in good health after suffering a horrific fractured elbow and being put to sleep in front of a referee.
Jiu-jitsu black belt Sven Groten faced off against Rene Handel in the Octagon at a grappling showdown event in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
During the cage match, Handel managed to put Groten in a reverse triangle choke.
As the choke intensified, Groten was forced to try to tap out, but the referee missed the tap before Groten lost consciousness during the seven-second choke.
Handel then looked up in disbelief that the fight was still going on and twisted the German's limp elbow.
The referee finally stopped the bout after realizing Groten was unconscious before performing a Brazilian leg lift.
Groten appeared in high spirits after the terrifying ordeal.
He revealed that he escaped any bone damage or fractures but suffered a dislocated elbow.
Groten took to his Instagram page to declare that he would win the rematch after accusing the referee of delaying the fight.
He said: “It was absolutely awful. I was strangled and my elbow was dislocated. There was no bone damage, but more information later.”
“I am in the hands of the best medical professionals at @sportsdoccgn and @pi.physio.
“Thank you to the staff at @versus.events for caring and reaching out to me personally, but the officiating was a terrible blunder.
“I don't blame my opponent @rene_haen at all. You were better yesterday.
“Next time we fight, I'll crush you. I promise. I'll come back stronger.”
Despite the loss, Groten still managed to win the silver medal at the tournament, with wins over Julian Van Marl and Abdul-Vahid Berzyshev.
